For some reason I suddenly can't send e-mail. I can receive mail just fine.

Many ISPs have started requiring users to authenticate their account information before sending e-mail. This is supposed to cut down on spam. The setting for you mail application can be found by searching the Help file for "authentication>"

This is an indication you have a "trojan horse" virus. This virus goes by several names, but basically disables your computers antivirus and firewall protection and can corrupt Windows system files. Here's an article than may help you remove this threat:
